Book Nine Poems of Lament 593
Headnote: "Composed when a woman with whom I had a secret affair died"
Composed when a woman with whom the poet had a secret affair died. The three years we were close feel like a dream, he says, and today is the waking parting. Because their love was hidden, the three years together seem as fleeting as a dream, and only today's parting by death presses on him as certain reality, a reversal of dream and waking that conveys his grief.
The author, "Master of the Right Capital Sueyoshi," was Fujiwara no Sueyoshi, a senior noble of the late Heian period who served as Master of the Right Capital among other posts.
Poems 551 and 567 of this book sing of being unable to tell waking from dream, while this poem divides them, the past as dream and today's parting as waking.
First line, "mitose made": "for as long as three years."
Second line, "nareshi wa yume no": "nare" is to grow close and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki," "that we were close is like a dream." Like "mishi yo no yume" in 567 of this book, it treats days gone by as a dream.
Third line, "kokochi shite": "it feels as if." Poem 585 of this book also speaks of "ima no kokochi," a gap between the passage of time and how it feels.
Fourth line, "kyō zo utsutsu no": the emphatic "zo" closes with the attributive "keru" in the last line. It sets "utsutsu," waking, against "yume" in the second line.
Fifth line, "wakare narikeru": "keru" is the attributive of "keri," expressing realization, closing the "zo" of the fourth line, "it was a real parting."
