Midarezu to owari kiku koso ureshikere satemo wakare wa nagusamanedomo

English Translation
That his heart was calm
when he came to his end, I hear,
and this brings me joy,
though still, for all of that,
the parting finds no comfort
Meaning
I am glad to hear that he met his end with an untroubled mind, though even so the sorrow of parting will not be consoled.
Commentary
Book Nine Poems of Lament 604

Headnote: "Sent to the Monk En'i on hearing that the Monk Saijū, when he died, had kept right mindfulness to the end"
Sent to the Monk En'i, that is, Saigyō, on hearing that the Monk Saijū had died in right mindfulness, his heart undisturbed and fixed on the Buddha. I am glad to hear his end was calm, the poet says, though the parting is not consoled. Rejoicing as a fellow believer that his friend achieved rebirth in the Pure Land, he still cannot shake the grief of losing him, and the poem shows a heart wavering between the two.
The author, "the Monk Jakuzen," is Fujiwara no Yorinari, son of Fujiwara no Tametada, who with his elder brothers Jakunen and Jakuchō was called one of the Three Jaku of Ōhara. He was a close friend of Saigyō.
It continues the sequence on Saijū's death from the preceding poem, 603, and the next poem, 605, is Saigyō's reply.

First line, "midarezu to": "without disturbance," meaning right mindfulness at death. The next poem, 605, answers with "kokoro midareshi."
Second line, "owari kiku koso": "owari" is the hour of death, and the emphatic "koso" closes with the perfective "kere" in the third line.
Third line, "ureshikere": "it gladdens me," and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "satemo wakare wa": "satemo" means "even so."
Fifth line, "nagusamanedomo": "ne" is the perfective of the negative "zu" and "domo" concessive, "though it is not consoled," in inverted relation to the upper verse.
