Commentary
Book Ten Poems of Celebration 612

Headnote: "Composed when various people offered poems on the topic 'Garden Blossoms, Long Years,' around the time Retired Emperor Toba had stepped down from the throne"
Composed soon after Emperor Toba abdicated, when people composed poems on the topic "Garden blossoms, long years." The blossoms on the young plum tree that was dug up and planted, he says, have a fragrance with no limit of years. Seeing in the newly planted young plum a tree that will go on blooming and giving off its scent without end, he celebrates the long future of the retired emperor. Emperor Toba abdicated in 1123.
The author, "Major Counselor Tadanori," was the son of Regent Fujiwara no Morozane. He rose to Major Counselor and is regarded as the founder of the Nanba and Asukai houses.
The preceding poem, 611, sings of cherries beginning to bloom, and this poem of a young plum tree; both entrust the length of the years to come to blossoms.

First line, "horiueshi": "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki," "which we dug up and planted."
Second line, "wakagi no ume ni": "on the young plum tree," newly planted.
Third line, "saku hana wa": "the flowers that bloom on it."
Fourth line, "toshi mo kagiranu": "with no limit of years," taking up "long years" in the topic. It shares its phrasing with "kagirazarikeru" in 606 and "kagiranu" in 627 of this book.
Fifth line, "nioi narikeri": "nioi" is the fragrance or the beauty of the blossoms. "Keri" expresses realization, "it was a fragrance."
