hearing all the common run
of those who fall in love,
do you think that mine as well
is but the way of the world?
Meaning
Grown used to hearing the words of all the ordinary people who fall in love, do you, my love, think that mine too is just the usual thing?
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems I 650

Headnote: "Composed as a love poem when hundred-poem sequences were presented"
Composed as a love poem when hundred-poem sequences were presented. Used to hearing the common run of lovers, he asks, do you think my love too is just the way of the world? Though his own love is uncommonly deep, he fears it is being brushed aside as one more of the lovers' words she has grown tired of hearing. The sequences are the Kyūan Hundred-Poem Sequences called for by Retired Emperor Sutoku.
The author, "the Ōinomikado Minister of the Right," is Fujiwara no Kinyoshi. The son of Minister of the Left Fujiwara no Saneyoshi, he rose to Minister of the Right. He was the father of Fujiwara no Sanesada, the Later Tokudaiji Minister of the Left.
The five poems from here to 654 are love poems from the same Kyūan sequences.

First line, "ōkata no": "common, ordinary."
Second line, "koi suru hito ni": "to the words of people in love."
Third line, "kikinarete": "having grown used to hearing," with "kimi," "you," in the last line as the subject.
Fourth line, "yo no tsune no to ya": "as the usual words of love," with the words of love left unsaid after "no." The interrogative binding particle "ya" closes with the attributive "ran" in the last line.
Fifth line, "kimi omouran": "ran," the attributive of the present conjectural "ramu," closes the "ya" of the fourth line, "do you think so?"
