Tachishi yori harezu mo mono o omou kana nakina ya nobe no kasumi naruran

English Translation
Since it rose up first,
never clearing, I have brooded
on and on in gloom:
is this rumor without ground
the haze that veils the fields?
Meaning
Ever since the rumor rose, my heart has never cleared, and I brood on and on. Is this groundless rumor the haze that hangs over the fields and will not lift?
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems I 659

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Love about Which a False Rumor Has Arisen' at the Katsura house of Provisional Middle Counselor Toshitada"
Composed on the topic "Love about which a false rumor has arisen" at Fujiwara no Toshitada's house in Katsura. Since the rumor rose, he says, my heart has never cleared and I brood; is this groundless rumor the haze over the fields? Using "tatsu," "to rise," and "harezu," "not clearing," in the sense they have for haze, he conveys the pain of a baseless rumor that, like haze, hangs about and will not lift, leaving his heart clouded as well.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was the son of Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. A central figure in the poetry circle of Emperor Horikawa, he compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa. His personal collection is the Sanboku Kika Shū, and he has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Poem 669 of this book also ends with "kasumi naruran," likening a cold heart to the haze that blocks the road to the Ōsaka Barrier. The exchange of 695 and 696 also turns on a "nakina," a groundless rumor.

First line, "tachishi yori": "tachi" combines a rumor "rising" and haze "rising." "Shi" is the attributive of the past "ki," "ever since it rose."
Second line, "harezu mo mono o": "hare" combines haze "clearing" and the heart "clearing."
Third line, "omou kana": "kana" is an exclamatory final particle, "how I brood." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "nakina ya nobe no": "nakina" is a groundless rumor. "Ya" is an interrogative binding particle that closes with the attributive "ran" in the last line. It is the same word as in "nakina naraji o" in the last line of 695.
Fifth line, "kasumi naruran": "ran," the attributive of the present conjectural "ramu," closes the "ya" of the fourth line. "Kasumi," "haze," is a related word to "tachi" and "hare." It is the same as the last line of 669.
