Omoedomo iwade Shinobu no surigoromo kokoro no uchi ni midarenuru kana

English Translation
Though I love, unspoken
I bear it, like the printed cloth
of Shinobu, and
deep within my secret heart
all is tangled in disarray
Meaning
Though I love, I keep it to myself in silence, and so, like the tangled pattern printed on the cloth of Shinobu, my heart is all in disarray within.
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems I 663

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Though I love, I endure without speaking, he says, and like the printed cloth of Shinobu my heart is thrown into disorder within. Drawing on the cloth of Shinobu in Michinoku, printed with a tangled pattern, he shows a heart thrown into turmoil within by a love that cannot be shown.
The author, "Yorimasa, Former Provisional Master of the Capital Office of the Right," is Minamoto no Yorimasa. The son of Minamoto no Nakamasa, Head of the Hyōgo Office, he was a warrior and poet who served as Provisional Master of the Capital Office of the Right. He later raised troops with Prince Mochihito against the Taira and died in defeat at Uji.
The next poem, 664, also sings of "shinobu mojizuri," so that two poems giving the turmoil of a hidden love to the tangled pattern of printed cloth stand side by side. Both draw on the Kokinshū poem by the Kawara Minister of the Left, "Michinoku no shinobu mojizuri tare yue ni midaresomenishi ware naranaku ni."

First line, "omoedomo": "though I love." It is the same as the first line of 651.
Second line, "iwade Shinobu no": "shinobu" combines "to endure in secret" and Shinobu in Michinoku.
Third line, "surigoromo": cloth printed with patterns using the juice of plants, here the tangled printed cloth of Shinobu.
Fourth line, "kokoro no uchi ni": "within my heart," without showing it outside.
Fifth line, "midarenuru kana": "midare" overlays the tangled pattern of the cloth and a heart in turmoil, a related word to "surigoromo." "Nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu," and "kana" is exclamatory.
