Book Eleven Love Poems I 669
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Love in Terms of Haze' when he composed a hundred poems on love"
Composed on the topic "Love in terms of haze" when he composed a hundred poems on love. Is her cold heart, he asks, the haze that blocks the road to the Ōsaka Barrier? Joining "Ausaka," Ōsaka, with "au," "to meet," and likening what keeps them from meeting to the haze over the barrier road, he laments that her unfeeling heart stands between them.
The author, "Kamo no Shigeyasu," was chief priest of the Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine. He held poetry contests at the shrine and compiled the Tsukimōde Wakashū, becoming the center of the poetic circle of the shrine families.
Like 659 of this book, it ends with "kasumi naruran," singing of the obstacles of love in terms of haze.
First line, "tsure mo naki": "cold, unfeeling."
Second line, "hito no kokoro ya": "ya" is an interrogative binding particle that closes with the attributive "ran" in the last line.
Third line, "Ausaka no": "ausaka" combines "au," "to meet" a lover, and Ōsaka, on the border of Yamashiro and Ōmi.
Fourth line, "sekiji hedatsuru": "sekiji" is the road to a barrier, here the Ōsaka Barrier, overlaid with "keeping us from meeting."
Fifth line, "kasumi naruran": "ran," the attributive of the present conjectural "ramu," closes the "ya" of the second line. It weaves in the "haze" of the topic. It is the same as the last line of 659.
