Book Eleven Love Poems I 690
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Because my tears of love for you have fallen as showers, he says, even Mount Shinobu has taken on color. Drawing on the idea that early winter showers turn the leaves, he likens his tears to such showers that have colored Mount Shinobu in Michinoku, and by joining "Shinobu" with "shinobu," "to endure in secret," he shows that the love he hid has now come into view.
The author, "Hafuribe no Sukune Narinaka," was a priest who served as negi at the Hie Shrine. He took part in many poetry contests as a poet.
The next poem, 691, also says that the leaves of "Shinobu no yama" deepen in color as the showers fall, so that two poems on the same famed place stand together. Its first line, "kimi kouru," is the same as the first line of 675 of this book.
First line, "kimi kouru": "loving you." It is the same as the first line of 675.
Second line, "namida shigure to": "my tears as showers," likening tears to the early winter showers, which were thought to turn the leaves.
Third line, "furinureba": "nure" is the perfective of the perfective auxiliary "nu," and with "ba" it means "since they have fallen."
Fourth line, "Shinobu no yama mo": "shinobu" combines Mount Shinobu in Michinoku and "shinobu," "to endure in secret." It is the same famed place as "Shinobu no yama no" in the second line of the next poem.
Fifth line, "irozukinikeri": "irozuku" overlays turning to autumn color and love showing itself. "Ni" is perfective, and "keri" expresses realization.
