Book Eleven Love Poems I 694
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the topic 'Hidden Love' for the hundred-poem sequences of the Regent when he was Minister of the Right"
Composed on the topic "Hidden love" for the same sequences as the preceding poem. My sleeves wet with muffled weeping have shown their color, she says; how unlike my heart are these tears of mine. Though she weeps without a sound, her sleeves, dyed by crimson tears, give her love away, and she laments tears that betray the heart that would keep it hidden.
The author, "Bettō of Kōkamon'in," was the daughter of Minamoto no Toshitaka, Assistant Master of the Grand Empress Dowager's Household. She served Kōkamon'in Seishi, empress of Emperor Sutoku. She has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Like the preceding poem, 693, it comes from the same sequences and sings of tears that show themselves against a heart that would hide. Like 687 and 688 of this book, it also sings of the color of tears.
First line, "shinobine no": "shinobine" means weeping with muffled voice.
Second line, "tamoto wa iro ni": "the sleeves, in color," the color of sleeves dyed with tears. It is akin to "tamoto o somuru" in the fourth line of 688.
Third line, "idenikeri": "ni" is perfective, and "keri" expresses realization, "it has shown." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "kokoro ni mo ninu": "unlike even my heart," which would keep it hidden.
Fifth line, "waga namida kana": "kana" is an exclamatory final particle, "these tears of mine."
