Even in my dreams
she appears so cold to me:
did I turn inside out
my nightclothes only so that
I might come to see her scorn?

- Even in my dreams she appears cold to me. Did I turn my nightclothes inside out only to end up resenting her? That was never my wish.

Book Eleven Love Poems I 700
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a love poem"
A love poem under the same headnote as the preceding poems. She appears cold even in my dreams, he says; did I turn my nightclothes inside out in order to resent her? Drawing on the belief that sleeping with one's nightclothes turned inside out lets one see the beloved in a dream, he laments that though he did so and dreamed of her, she was cold to him even there. "Urami" joins "ura-mi," seeing the lining of the robe, and "urami," resentment, binding the poem through the related words of clothing.
The author, "Fujiwara no Koretsuna," was an official and poet of the end of the Heian period. Little is known of his career.
Like "yume no kayoiji" in 677 of this book, it sings of seeking the beloved in a dream.
First line, "tsurenaku zo": the emphatic binding particle "zo" closes with the attributive "miyuru" in the second line.
Second line, "yume ni mo miyuru": "she appears cold even in my dreams." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "sayogoromo": nightclothes, drawing on the belief that turning them inside out lets one dream of the beloved.
Fourth line, "uramin to te wa": "urami" combines seeing the "ura," lining, of the robe and "uramu," to resent.
Fifth line, "kaeshi ya wa seshi": "kaeshi" means turning the robe inside out, "ya wa" is rhetorical, and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki," "did I turn it for that? Surely not."
