in having met her in a dream
I will find my comfort,
for the waking world as well,
is it not too but a dream?

Very well, then, I will take comfort in having met her in my dream; for this waking world I wake to, is it not a dream as well?
Commentary
Book Twelve Love Poems II 720

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Very well, he says, I will take comfort in having met her in a dream; is not the waking world a dream as well? Meeting in a dream the beloved he cannot meet in reality, he grieves on waking, but then reflects that the reality of this world is as fleeting as a dream, and seeks to find solace in that dream meeting.
The author, "Provisional Major Counselor Saneie," was the son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Kinyoshi. He rose to Provisional Major Counselor. His elder brother was Fujiwara no Sanesada, the Go-Tokudaiji Minister of the Left.
As if taking up "saraba" in the fourth line of the preceding poem, 719, this poem opens with "yoshi saraba." Poem 756 of this book also laments a parting on waking, with a dream taken as a vow, and corresponds to this poem in singing of dream and waking.

First line, "yoshi saraba": "yoshi" expresses resignation, "very well," and "saraba" means "then." It uses the same word as "saraba" in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
Second line, "au to mitsuru ni": "mitsuru" means "saw in a dream," "in having seen myself meet her."
Third line, "nagusaman": "n" is the volitional "mu," "I will take comfort." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "samuru utsutsu mo": "samuru" is to wake from a dream and "utsutsu" is reality, "this reality I wake to."
Fifth line, "yume naranu ka wa": "ka wa" is rhetorical, "is it not a dream? Reality too is a dream."
