Book Twelve Love Poems II 722
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
To whom should I bequeath this life that will die of love, he asks, so that someone may see the end of the cruel one? He himself will die for love, but he would hand his life to someone else to witness what becomes of the cold one, a poem of striking conceit charged with resentment.
The author, "the monk Shun'e," was the son of Minamoto no Toshiyori. A monk of Tōdai-ji, he named his own quarters in Shirakawa the Karin'en and gathered poets there for poetry meetings. He was the poetry teacher of Kamo no Chōmei and has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The first line, "koishinan," is the same as the first lines of 730, 759 and 762 of this book, so that poems of dying for love recur throughout the book.
First line, "koishinan": "n" is the attributive of the conjectural "mu," "which will die of love." Poems 730, 759 and 762 of this book open with the same line.
Second line, "inochi o tare ni": "this life, to whom," with the question word "tare" answering "mashi" in the last line.
Third line, "yuzuriokite": "handing it on beforehand." It has an extra syllable.
Fourth line, "tsurenaki hito no": "of the cold one who does not answer my love."
Fifth line, "hate o misemashi": "hate" is the final outcome, and "mashi" expresses hesitant intention; with "tare" in the second line it means "to whom should I show it?"
