Book Twelve Love Poems II 738
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Ever since I met her in a dream while dozing, he says, I find myself waiting for an evening she never promised. Drawing on Ono no Komachi's poem in the Kokin Wakashū, "Utatane ni koishiki hito o miteshi yori yume chō mono wa tanomisometeki," he expresses a heart that, having met the beloved in a dream, cannot help waiting at dusk for one with no promise of coming.
The author, "the monk Genkei," was a monk of the late Heian period. Little is known of his career.
Poem 744 of this book, which reproaches the great sky for being slow to darken while waiting for a lover's visit, corresponds to this poem in singing of a heart that waits for evening.
First line, "utatane no": "of a doze," falling asleep without meaning to lie down. It draws on Ono no Komachi's poem beginning "utatane ni."
Second line, "yume ni aimite": "having met her in a dream."
Third line, "nochi yori wa": "ever since."
Fourth line, "hito mo tanomenu": "tanome" is "tanomu" in the lower bigrade conjugation, "to make someone rely on, to promise." "Nu" is the attributive of the negative "zu," "which she never promised."
Fifth line, "kure zo mataruru": "zo" is an emphatic particle binding with the attributive "mataruru," and "ruru" is the spontaneous auxiliary "ru," "I cannot help waiting for evening." Poem 744 of this book also sings of waiting for dusk.
