Book Twelve Love Poems II 743
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Love conveyed through a village'"
Composed on the topic "Love conveyed through a village." Of meeting her, he says, I keep thinking only "surely, someday," trusting in the name of Fushimi village. With "Fushimi" echoing "fushi mi," lying down, he clings to the name of a village that suggests lying together and keeps alive the hope of meeting one day.
The author, "Captain of the Left Gate Guards Iemichi," is Fujiwara no Iemichi. He served as Captain of the Left Gate Guards and rose to Provisional Middle Counselor.
Poem 710 of this book also sings of "the village of Fushimi," making use of the echo of "fushi," "lying down," in the place name. Where 710 sings of a love that ended without a vow though the two lay together, this poem has a love not yet met trusting in that name, so that the same place name sets the time after a meeting against the time before. The first line, "au koto o," is the same as in 714.
First line, "au koto o": "our meeting." Poem 714 of this book opens with the same line.
Second line, "saritomo to nomi": "saritomo" means "even so, surely," expressing the hope that they will meet someday.
Third line, "omou kana": "kana" is exclamatory, "so I keep thinking!" The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with what follows.
Fourth line, "Fushimi no sato no": "Fushimi" pivots between the place in Yamashiro and "fushi mi," lying down, evoking lying together. It is the same as the second line of 710 of this book.
Fifth line, "na o tanomitsutsu": "tsutsu" expresses continuation, "trusting in its name all the while."
