Koishinan namida no hate ya watarigawa fukaki nagare to naran to suran

English Translation
Dying of my love,
will my tears come in the end
to the River of Crossing,
there at last to turn into
its deep and rushing current?
Meaning
As I die of love, will my tears in the end become the deep current of the river the dead must cross?
Commentary
Book Twelve Love Poems II 759

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Will the tears of one dying of love, he asks, at last become the deep current of the River of Crossing? The tears he sheds for love will at length bring him to death, and their end will be the deep current of the Sanzu River that the dead are said to cross on the way to the underworld, a sorrow of love that reaches beyond death.
The author, "Minamoto no Mitsuyuki," was the son of Minamoto no Mitsusue. An official who also served the Kamakura shogunate, he is known as the editor of the Kawachi text of The Tale of Genji.
The first line, "koishinan," is the same as in 722, 730 and 762 of this book. Poem 762 also sings of the River of Crossing; where this poem says tears will become its deep current, 762 says there is no ford for meeting in that river, so that the two form a pair around the same river.

First line, "koishinan": "n" is the attributive of the conjectural "mu," "who will die of love." Poems 722, 730 and 762 of this book open with the same line.
Second line, "namida no hate ya": "hate" is where something ends up, and "ya" is an interrogative particle binding with "ran" in the last line.
Third line, "watarigawa": the Sanzu River, which the dead are said to cross on their way to the underworld. It is the same word as in the third line of 762 of this book.
Fourth line, "fukaki nagare to": "into a deep current," showing the abundance of tears.
Fifth line, "naran to suran": "ran" is the attributive of the conjectural "ramu," concluding the "ya" of the second line, "will they come to be?"
