Omoine no yume dani miete akenureba awade mo tori no ne koso tsurakere

English Translation
Sleeping full of love,
I saw her at least in dreams,
but when dawn has come,
though we never truly met,
how it hurts, the cock's first crow
Meaning
Falling asleep with longing, I saw her at least in a dream; and when dawn came, though we had never truly met, the crowing of the cock was hard to bear.
Commentary
Book Twelve Love Poems II 765

Headnote: "Composed as a love poem"
Composed as a love poem. In the dream of one who slept with longing, she at least appeared, he says, and when dawn comes, though we did not meet, the cry of the cock is bitter. The cock's cry at dawn is meant to hurry lovers who have slept together into parting, yet it sounds bitter even to one who met his love only in a dream, since it breaks off that dream meeting, expressing the poignancy of love.
The author, "the monk Jakuren," was the son of Shunkai. His lay name was Sadanaga; he was adopted by his uncle Fujiwara no Shunzei but later took the tonsure. He was chosen as one of the compilers of the Shin Kokin Wakashū but died before it was finished. He has a poem in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The next poem, 766, calls the night that will not dawn cold as one broods all night long, forming a reversed design around daybreak with this poem, which finds it bitter that night has ended.

First line, "omoine no": "of sleeping while longing for one's love."
Second line, "yume dani miete": "dani" expresses a minimum, "she appeared, at least in a dream."
Third line, "akenureba": "nure" is the perfective form of the perfective auxiliary "nu," "when night has dawned." It reverses "akeyaranu," "not yet dawning," in the third line of the next poem.
Fourth line, "awade mo tori no": "de" is a negative conjunctive particle, "even without meeting." "Tori" is the cock that announces the dawn.
Fifth line, "ne koso tsurakere": "koso" is an emphatic particle and "tsurakere" the perfective form of "tsurashi," binding together, "the cock's cry is bitter."
