I thought that I had lent
our night of meeting,
yet on that very night a rumor
without ground has sprung up

Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 784

Headnote: "Sent when, after Major Counselor Asateru had talked with me on the night of the seventh of the Seventh Month, people the next day spoke as though there were something between us"
Sent to Major Counselor Fujiwara no Asateru when, after the two had talked together on the night of the seventh of the Seventh Month, people the next day gossiped as though there were something between them. I thought I had lent our meeting to the Weaver Star, she says, yet that very night a groundless rumor has arisen. With the wit of having handed over the once-a-year meeting of Tanabata to the stars, though she herself met no one, she lightly expresses her dismay at baseless gossip.
The author, "Kodai no Kimi," was a lady chamberlain who served Emperor Sanjō while he was Crown Prince, also known as Sakon. She is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals. "Major Counselor Asateru" in the headnote is Fujiwara no Asateru, son of Regent Fujiwara no Kanemichi, who rose to Major Counselor.

First line, "Tanabata ni": "Tanabata" is the Weaver Star, who meets the Herdsman once a year, taking up "the night of the seventh of the Seventh Month" in the headnote.
Second line, "kashitsu to omoishi": "tsu" is the perfective and "shi" the attributive of the past "ki," "I thought I had lent," the witty notion of yielding the night's meeting to the stars.
Third line, "au koto o": "the meeting," the object of "kashitsu" in the second line.
Fourth line, "sono yo nakina no": "nakina" is a groundless rumor, an undeserved reputation. "Sono yo" is the night of the seventh in the headnote.
Fifth line, "tachinikeru kana": "ni" is perfective, "keru" the attributive of the exclamatory "keri," and "kana" an exclamatory particle, "has arisen, alas!" "Na no tatsu" means for a rumor to spread.
