Book Thirteen Love Poems III 787
Headnote: "Composed on the heart of love when hundred-poem sequences were presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Composed on the heart of love when hundred-poem sequences were presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa; the sequences are the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequences. By myself sleeping alone, he says, I have come to know the heart of the mandarin duck on the pond that has no mate. Mandarin ducks were thought never to leave their mates, and from his own lonely sleep he imagines the loneliness of one duck without a partner, conveying the desolation of love's solitary nights.
The author, "Major Counselor Kinzane," is Fujiwara no Kinzane; the original writes the title with a variant character. The son of Provisional Major Counselor Fujiwara no Sanesue, he was a maternal uncle of Emperor Horikawa and rose to Provisional Major Counselor.
The three poems from this one to 789 are all love poems from the Horikawa sequences.
First line, "hitori nuru": "sleeping alone," unable to sleep with the one he loves.
Second line, "ware nite shirinu": "nite" marks the means, "through myself who sleep alone," and "nu" is perfective, "I have come to know." The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with the lower half.
Third line, "ikemizu ni": "on the water of the pond," where the duck is.
Fourth line, "tsugawanu oshi no": "tsugau" is to be paired, so "of the mandarin duck without a mate." Mandarin ducks were held to be devoted pairs.
Fifth line, "omou kokoro o": "the heart that the duck feels," the object of "shirinu" in the second line.
