Book Thirteen Love Poems III 811
Headnote: "Sent after Middle Counselor Kunizane had secretly spoken with me"
Sent after Middle Counselor Minamoto no Kunizane had secretly visited her and they had pledged themselves. Like the knots in the pillars of rough wood in a cottage, she says, when did I grow so used to lying with you that, to my own surprise, I long for you so? Turning from the "fushi," knots, of the cottage pillars to the "fushi" of lying together, she conveys how, though their bond should still be shallow, she has grown used to sharing his bed before she knew it, and longs for him so much that she surprises herself.
The author, "Shin-Hizen of the Former Kamo Priestess," was a lady-in-waiting to a Kamo Priestess. Little is known of her career. "Middle Counselor Kunizane" in the headnote is Minamoto no Kunizane, son of Minister of the Right Minamoto no Akifusa, who rose to Provisional Middle Counselor and was one of the poets of the Horikawa sequences.
First line, "Azumaya no": an "azumaya" is a simple cottage with eaves sloping on all four sides.
Second line, "asagi no hashira": the rough wooden pillars of the cottage, which lead through their "fushi," knots, into "fushi" in the fourth line. The first two lines work as a preface. The character for "shallow" in "asagi" hints that their bond is still shallow.
Third line, "ware nagara": "even to myself," showing a longing that surprises her.
Fourth line, "itsu fushi narete": "fushi" pivots between the "knots" of the pillars and "lying" together, "when did I grow so used to lying with you?"
Fifth line, "koishikaruran": "ran" conjectures a cause, "that I long for you so?"
