Though I count for nought,
as if even I possessed
a heart that could feel,
all alone I gazed up
at the moon lost in thought

Though I count for nothing, I have gazed up at the moon all alone, lost in thought, as if even I had a heart that could feel.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 819

Headnote: "Composed on seeing the moon after Fujiwara no Nakazane Ason's love had cooled, when I had gone down with him on his posting as Governor of Bitchū"
Composed on seeing the moon after the love of Fujiwara no Nakazane had cooled; when he went down to his province as Governor of Bitchū, the poet had gone with him. As if even one of no account had a heart, she says, I have gazed at the moon alone. She, a courtesan of no account, gazes alone at the moon lost in thought like someone who knows feeling, and while humbling herself she cannot hide the sorrow of one on the verge of being cast off.
The author, "the courtesan Todo," was a courtesan who went down to Bitchū with Fujiwara no Nakazane. Little is known of her career. "Fujiwara no Nakazane Ason" in the headnote was the son of Fujiwara no Yoshinari, who served as Governor of Bitchū and elsewhere and was one of the poets of the Horikawa sequences.

First line, "kazu naranu": "of no account, not worth counting," humbling herself as a courtesan.
Second line, "mi ni mo kokoro no": "even one such as I, a heart."
Third line, "arigao ni": "arigao" is a look of seeming to have something, "as if I had a heart."
Fourth line, "hitori mo tsuki o": "alone, the moon," showing her left alone as Nakazane's love cooled.
Fifth line, "nagametsuru kana": "nagamu" is to gaze vacantly, lost in thought, "tsuru" the attributive of the perfective "tsu," and "kana" an exclamatory particle.
