Wakekitsuru ozasa ga tsuyu no shigekereba au michi ni sae nururu sode kana

English Translation
Parting as I came
the dwarf bamboo, its dew lay
so thick upon it
that even on the road to you
my sleeves are drenched through
Meaning
So thick was the dew on the dwarf bamboo I pushed through on my way that even on the road to meet you, my sleeves are drenched.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 822

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Love expressed through saibara songs'"
Composed on the topic "love expressed through saibara songs." So heavy was the dew on the dwarf bamboo I parted on my way, he says, that even on the road to our meeting my sleeves are wet. Sleeves that should be wet from weeping in love are wet with the dew of the dwarf bamboo even on the joyful road to meet the beloved, a conceit conveying one in love who cannot keep his sleeves dry even before meeting.
The author, "Fujiwara no Koretsune," was the son of Fujiwara no Koreyuki. He was known as a calligrapher of the Sesonji school.
Sharing "ozasa ga" in the second line with the preceding poem, which sang of a love ended like withered bamboo, this one sings of going to meet the beloved through dew-laden bamboo, so that a love ended and a love about to meet stand side by side.

First line, "wakekitsuru": "tsuru" is the attributive of the perfective "tsu," "that I came pushing through."
Second line, "ozasa ga tsuyu no": "the dew on the dwarf bamboo." It shares "ozasa ga" with "ozasa ga fushi o" in the second line of the preceding poem, 821.
Third line, "shigekereba": "shigeshi" means thick, abundant, and "ba" gives a fixed condition, "since the dew was so thick."
Fourth line, "au michi ni sae": "sae" is an additive particle, "even on the road to our meeting," not only when weeping in love.
Fifth line, "nururu sode kana": "kana" is an exclamatory particle, "how wet my sleeves are!"
