Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 830

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
Finding this self that you loathe too wretched, he says, has even my heart left me to stay by your side? It is as though his own heart, giving up on the self that is loathed, has left him and gone to her, a conceit conveying a love whose heart cannot leave her even when the self is kept at a distance.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takachika," was an official and poet of the late Heian period. Little is known of his career.
Poem 826 of this book sang "if I am not one to be loathed," while this one laments being loathed, forming a reversed picture. And where 805 of this book sings of a heart left on the bed that waits for its owner, this one sings of a heart that leaves its owner to stay by the beloved, sharing the conceit of a heart parted from the self.

First line, "itowaruru": "ruru" is the attributive of the passive "ru," "loathed." Like "itowarenubeki" in the second line of 826 of this book, it sings of a self loathed by the beloved.
Second line, "mi o ushi tote ya": "ushi" means wretched, and "ya" is an interrogative particle that binds with "ran" in the last line, "finding this self too wretched?"
Third line, "kokoro sae": "sae" is additive, "even my heart," not only my self.
Fourth line, "ware o hanarete": "leaving me," the heart abandoning its owner.
Fifth line, "kimi ni souran": "sou" is to stay close by, and "ran" the attributive of the present conjectural "ramu," concluding "ya."
