Not the fern of fond remembrance,

the plant that grows thick by the eaves:
that is the name that pains me

Book Thirteen Love Poems III 834
Headnote: "Sent to a woman who had forgotten our vows"
Sent to a woman who had forgotten the vows they exchanged. What is it called, he says: not the shinobu fern, but the plant that grows thick under the eaves of an old home, its name is what pains me. Both the shinobu fern and the day lily called "forgetting grass" were said to grow under the eaves of a neglected house, and he hints that what grows thick in her heart is not the shinobu fern of fond remembrance but the forgetting grass, deliberately leaving its name unsaid as he reproaches her for forgetting their vows.
The author, "Middle Captain of the Right Palace Guards Tadayoshi," is Fujiwara no Tadayoshi. The son of Regent Fujiwara no Motozane, he served as Middle Captain of the Right Palace Guards and later rose to Major Counselor.
First line, "nani to ka ya": "ya" is an interrogative particle, "what is it called?", deliberately leaving the plant unnamed. The poem pauses here.
Second line, "shinobu ni wa arade": "shinobu" pivots between the shinobu fern growing on the eaves and "shinobu," remembering fondly. "De" is a negative conjunctive particle, "not the shinobu fern."
Third line, "furusato no": "furusato" is an old, familiar place, her dwelling.
Fourth line, "nokiba ni shigeru": "nokiba" is the edge of the eaves, where forgetting grass was said to grow thick along with the shinobu fern on a neglected house.
Fifth line, "kusa no na zo uki": "kusa no na" is the name of the forgetting grass. "Zo" is emphatic and binds with the attributive "uki," reproaching her for forgetting their vows without naming it.
