Book Thirteen Love Poems III 836
Headnote: "Sent to someone"
Sent to someone. Do you know, he says, that with the dew of my falling tears, on the bed of parting I long for you as though to vanish? On the bed after they parted at the night's end, he longs for her as though he too would vanish like the dewdrops of his falling tears, pleading with her the poignant feelings of the morning after.
"His Majesty the Retired Emperor Nijō" refers to poems by Retired Emperor Nijō, the first son of Emperor Go-Shirakawa and the seventy-eighth emperor. He loved poetry and often held poetry gatherings at the palace during his reign, but died at the age of twenty-three.
This poem and the next, 837, form an exchange: this one pleads the tears of the bed of parting, while the next retorts that those tears are mere pretext.
First line, "shirurame ya": "rame" is the realized form of the present conjectural "ramu" and "ya" rhetorical, "do you know? Surely not." The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with the lower half.
Second line, "otsuru namida no": "of my falling tears."
Third line, "tsuyu tomo ni": "along with the dew" of tears, leading, as dew vanishes, into "kie" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "wakare no toko ni": "wakare no toko" is the bed after lovers have parted at the night's end. "Toko no namida" in the fourth and last lines of the next poem takes up the same bed.
Fifth line, "kiete kou to wa": "kiyu" is to sink in longing as though vanishing, an associated word of dew, "that I long for you as if to vanish," returning to "shirurame ya" in the first line.
