Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 870
Headnote: "Reply to His Majesty"
This is the woman's reply to the preceding poem, 869. The warblers, she says, must all have grown used to the capital; it is I alone who cry aloud in the old nest. Taking up the image of the warbler from the preceding poem just as it is, she turns it back, saying that the warbler, that is, the emperor, has surely grown used to the lively capital and sings in other places too, and she laments her own lot, left behind in the old nest to weep. It expresses the heart of a woman who cannot quite believe his words that he sings to her alone.
The author is given as "anonymous."
It forms an exchange with the preceding poem, 869. Where that poem said the warbler lets only her hear its first song, this one replies "it is I alone who cry," so that "kimi ni nomi," "to you alone," and "ware nomi," "I alone," stand as a pair.
First line, "uguisu wa": it takes up "uguisu no" in the third line of the preceding poem, 869, likening the emperor to the warbler.
Second line, "nabete miyako ni": "nabete" means "all, alike."
Third line, "nareniran": "nu" is a completive auxiliary and "ran" an auxiliary of present conjecture, "must have grown used to it." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "furusu ni ne o ba": "furusu," the warbler's old nest, stands for herself, no longer cared for. "Ne" is the voice of singing or weeping.
Fifth line, "ware nomi zo naku": "naku" pivots between the warbler's "singing" and her own "weeping." "Zo" is an emphatic particle that binds with the attributive "naku." It pairs with "kimi ni nomi koso" in the fourth line of the preceding poem, answering with "ware nomi."
