Kari ni zo to iwanu saki yori tanomarezu tachitomaru beki kokoro naraneba

English Translation
Before you could say
"just off to the hunt," I knew
not to put my trust;
yours is not a heart that would
ever stop and stay a while
Meaning
Even before you told me you were off "for the hunt," just for a passing while, I knew I could not rely on you, for yours is not a heart that would ever stay.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 914

Headnote: "Sent on her daughter's behalf when the man who visited her daughter sent to borrow a sword, saying he was going hunting"
The man who had been visiting the poet's daughter sent a messenger to borrow a sword, saying he was going hunting, and she sent this poem on her daughter's behalf. Even before you said "kari ni," she says, I could not rely on you, for yours is not a heart that would stop and stay. Taking his "kari ni," "for the hunt," as "kari ni," "for a passing while," she remarks wryly that her daughter never counted on a bond he would call a passing affair, and pivoting the "tachi," "sword," he asked for into "tachitomaru," "to stop and stay," she reproaches a heart that will not stay. It is a witty poem written on another's behalf that weaves the very words of the headnote into the verse.
The author, "Akazome Emon," was the daughter of Akazome no Tokimochi; her real father is said by some to have been Taira no Kanemori. She became the wife of Ōe no Masahira, Professor of Letters, and served Rinshi, wife of Fujiwara no Michinaga, and their daughter Jōtōmon'in Shōshi. A poem of hers is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Like poem 913 of this book, it is a poem of exchange that turns the other's words back on him through pivot words.

First line, "kari ni zo to": "kari" pivots between "kari," "hunting," which he spoke of, and "kari," "temporary, passing." The emphatic "zo" is followed by "to," quoting his words.
Second line, "iwanu saki yori": "even before you said it."
Third line, "tanomarezu": "re" is the irrealis of the potential "ru," and "zu" the negative, "I could not rely on you." The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with the lines that follow.
Fourth line, "tachitomaru beki": "tachi" pivots between "tachi," "sword," named in the headnote, and the "tachi" of "tachitomaru," "to stop and stay." "Beki" is the attributive of the conjectural "beshi."
Fifth line, "kokoro naraneba": "ne" is the perfective of the negative "zu," and with "ba" it means "since it is not a heart that would." It gives the reason for the third line afterward, in inverted order.
