Book Fifteen Love Poems V 931
Headnote: "Composed as a love poem"
Composed as a love poem. I find I have no cause to call you cold, he says; is it you alone who shuns what is wretched? The beloved avoids him because he is a sorry, wretched creature, and since it is not only the beloved but he himself who shuns such a self, he says with self-mockery that he cannot reproach the other for coldness.
The author, "the monk Yūsei," was the son of Minamoto no Toshiyori. A younger brother of Shun'e, he was a monk known as a poet.
From this poem to 933 come poems that share the word "uki," "wretched." This poem says that it is not the beloved alone who shuns the wretched self, and the next, 932, "ukimi yue koso hito mo tsurakere," sees the other's coldness as caused by his own wretchedness, the two sharing a mood of self-reflection.
First line, "tsurashi to mo": "tsurashi" means heartless or cold, "even to call you cold."
Second line, "uramuru kata zo": "kata" means a way or ground, "any ground for reproach." The emphatic "zo" closes with the attributive "keru" in the third line.
Third line, "nakarikeru": "keru" is the attributive of "keri," expressing realization, closing the "zo" of the second line, "there was none." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "uki o itou wa": "uki" is what is wretched and sorry, here his own self. "Itou" means to dislike and avoid. It shares "uki" with "ukimi yue koso" in the fourth line of the next poem, 932.
Fifth line, "kimi hitori ka wa": "ka wa" is a rhetorical particle, "is it you alone? no, I am the same."
