Book Fifteen Love Poems V 933
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a love poem"
Composed as a love poem, like the two preceding ones. As for one who forgets even me who loves, he says, let it be; I only wish for a heart that would not long for the cruel. He casts off the beloved who not only does not return his love but forgets him, saying it no longer matters, yet what he really wants to master is his own heart, which goes on longing for that person all the same. It is a poem of love's lingering attachment, unable to give up even while trying to.
The author, "Minamoto no Arifusa," was a poet of the end of the Heian period. His personal collection is the Arifusa Shū.
Poem 918 of this book, "ukihito o shinobu beshi to wa omoiki ya," laments a heart that has come to long for a cruel one, while this poem wishes not to have such a heart; sharing the words "uki" and "shinobu," the two form a reversed composition.
First line, "omou o mo": "even me, who love."
Second line, "wasururu hito wa": "one who forgets." It shares its wording with "wasururu wa" in the first line of 908 of this book.
Third line, "sa mo araba are": a line with extra syllables, "let it be as it will, come what may." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "uki o shinobanu": "uki" refers to a cruel person, and "shinobu" means to long for, "not longing for the cruel one." It shares both "uki" and "shinobu" with "ukihito o shinobu beshi to wa" in the first and second lines of 918 of this book.
Fifth line, "kokoro to mo gana": "mo gana" is a final particle of wishing, "would that it were such a heart."
