Though the years go by,
this wretched self of mine will
never change at all,
and your cruelty too, I think,
is the same cruelty as before

Though the years go by, this wretched self of mine will never change at all; and your coldness, I suppose, is the very same coldness as before.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 937

Headnote: "Sent when a man who had long stopped coming remembered her and said that from now on he would have no fickle heart"
This poem was sent when a man who had long since stopped visiting remembered her and said that from now on he would have no fickle heart. Though the years pass, she says, my wretched self will never change, and your cruelty too must be the same cruelty. Just as her own sorry lot does not change, his coldness, she suspects, will in the end be the same as ever, and voicing her inability to trust his glib vow, she gently turns him away.
The author, "Chūjō of the Former Tsuchimikado Priestess," was a lady-in-waiting who served the former Kamo Priestess of Tsuchimikado. Little is known of her life.
Poem 939 of this book opens with the same first line, "toshi furedo." Where this poem sings of a self and a cruelty that do not change with the years, 939 sings of tears that still overflow beyond bearing as the years pass.

First line, "toshi furedo": "fure" is the perfective of "fu," "to pass," and with "do" it gives a concessive fixed condition, "though the years pass." It is the same as the first line of 939 of this book.
Second line, "ukimi wa sara ni": "ukimi" is one's own wretched self, and "sara ni" with a negative below means "not at all."
Third line, "kawaraji o": "ji" is the negative conjectural and "o" an adversative particle, "though it will not change."
Fourth line, "tsurasa mo onaji": "tsurasa" is the other's coldness. Repeating "tsurasa" in the last line stresses a coldness that does not change.
Fifth line, "tsurasa naruran": "ran" is the present conjectural "ramu," "it must be the same coldness."
