Book Fifteen Love Poems V 950
Headnote: "Composed as a love poem"
Composed as a love poem. Changed from what was promised, like the plover of Naruto's shore, he says, you show not even a track, and I resent it. Pivoting "naruto" between "naru," "to become," and the place name Naruto, "ato" between a plover's footprints and handwriting, and "urami" between "gazing at the shore" and "resentment," he overlays the scene of plovers on the shore of Naruto with his resentment of a lover who has broken her word and does not send even one letter. It is a highly crafted poem layering pivot words and related words.
The author, "Fujiwara no Tsuneie Ason," was the son of Fujiwara no Shigeie, Senior Assistant Governor-General of Dazaifu. A poet of the Rokujō Fujiwara house, he later rose to the Third Rank.
Like 911 of this book, "ayashiki tori no ato no midare o," it likens bird tracks to a letter. It also shares "urami" with "urami wa taenu" in 943, both singing of "resentment" through the association with the shore.
First line, "chigirishi ni": "shi" is the attributive of the past "ki," "unlike when we pledged."
Second line, "arazu Naruto no": "naruto" pivots between "naru," "to become" other than promised, and the place name Naruto in Awa.
Third line, "hamachidori": the plover of the beach, leading to "ato," "track," in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "ato dani misenu": "ato" pivots between the plover's footprints and the handwriting of a letter. "Dani" is an adverbial particle, "not showing even a track," that is, not sending even a letter. It shares the image with "ato no midare o" in the last line of 911 of this book.
Fifth line, "urami o zo suru": "urami" pivots between "ura mi," "looking at the shore," and "urami," "resentment." The emphatic "zo" closes with the attributive "suru." "Naruto," "hamachidori" and "ura" are related words. It shares "urami" with "urami wa taenu" in the fourth line of 943 of this book.
