Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 973
Headnote: "Sent in reply when, the day after the purification at Karasaki that followed my replacement as Kamo Priestess, the Prince of Sōrinji asked what had happened the day before"
After she stepped down as Kamo Priestess, the day after her purification at Karasaki, the Prince of Sōrinji asked how the previous day had gone, and this poem was sent in reply. Feeling that my reflection in the Mitarashi has vanished for good, I have come back along the wave-paths of Shiga with wet sleeves, she says. Having finished her long service as Kamo Priestess, she entrusts the loneliness of never again casting her image on the Mitarashi River to the tears on her sleeves, wet by the waves of Shiga.
The author, "Princess Shokushi," was a daughter of Emperor Go-Shirakawa. She served as Kamo Priestess and later took the tonsure. She studied poetry under Fujiwara no Shunzei and is one of the leading women poets of the Shinkokin age; a poem of hers is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Like the preceding poem, 972, this one sings of the purification at Karasaki after the priestess stepped down, sharing the words "Mitarashi" and "Shiga." Where the preceding poem is composed from the standpoint of one in attendance, this one is composed from the heart of the priestess herself, and the two form a pair.
First line, "Mitarashi ya": the Mitarashi River of the Kamo Shrine, with "ya" as an exclamatory particle. It answers "Mitarashigawa ni" in the second line of the preceding poem, 972.
Second line, "kage taehatsuru": "kage" is her own image reflected on the water and "hatsu" means to do completely, "my image vanishes utterly."
Third line, "kokochi shite": "with such a feeling."
Fourth line, "Shiga no namiji ni": "namiji" means the path over the waves, the journey to Karasaki. It answers "Shiga no uranami" in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "sode zo nurekoshi": the emphatic binding particle "zo" closes with "shi," the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki," "my sleeves have come back wet," layering spray from the waves with tears.
