English Translation
Am I all alone
in being moved so deeply?
I long to show
to someone other than myself
the moon that shines tonight
Meaning
Am I the only one so deeply moved? I would like to show tonight's moon to someone other than myself and find out.
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 986

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Am I alone in being so moved? I would show tonight's moon to someone other than myself, she says. Tonight's moon is so beautiful that she wants to know whether this feeling is hers alone or whether others feel it too, and she frankly expresses the wish to share her emotion.
The author, "Izumi Shikibu," was the daughter of Ōe no Masamune, Governor of Echizen. She became the wife of Tachibana no Michisada, Governor of Izumi, and bore him Koshikibu no Naishi, and later had love affairs with Prince Tametaka and Prince Atsumichi. She served Jōtōmon'in Shōshi and is known for her passionate love poems.
Where "hitori ite" in 983 of this book sings of brooding alone before the moon, this poem wishes to share the feeling of being moved "alone" with others, so that around the solitary moon a closed heart and an open heart form a pair. Together with the preceding poem, 985, moon poems by women poets with unknown topics continue.

First line, "hitori nomi": "I alone." It answers "hitori ite" in the first line of 983 of this book.
Second line, "aware naru ka to": "aware nari" means to be deeply moved, and "ka" is an interrogative particle.
Third line, "ware naranu": "other than myself."
Fourth line, "hito ni koyoi no": "to another, tonight's."
Fifth line, "tsuki o miseba ya": "baya" is a particle of wish, "I would like to show the moon."
