English Translation
Had the morning moon
filtering between the trees
not seen me on my way,
would I then have left alone
from the summit of the hills?
Meaning
Had the dawn moon filtering through the trees not seen me off, would I have had to leave the mountain peak all alone?
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1001

Headnote: "Composed when I left at dawn after being secluded for some days at the mountain temple of Minoo, and the moon was lovely"
After being secluded for days at the mountain temple of Minoo, he left at dawn, and since the moon was lovely he composed this poem. Had the dawn moon filtering through the trees not seen me off, would I have left the peak alone, he asks. Feeling the dawn moon that lights his path from the mountain temple to be like a friend seeing him off, he takes comfort that thanks to it he is not alone.
The author, the "Later Lay Prince-Priest of Ninnaji," is Prince-Priest Kakushō. A son of Emperor Toba, he entered Ninnaji, took vows and became its abbot.
It shares "the moon at dawn" with the preceding poem, 1000. Where the preceding poem pleads with the dawn moon not to hide, this poem's dawn moon sees one on one's way, and both share a sense of intimacy with the moon.

First line, "ko no ma moru": "filtering through the trees."
Second line, "ariake no tsuki no": the moon remaining in the dawn sky, taking up "ariake no tsuki" in the fifth line of the preceding poem, 1000.
Third line, "okurazu wa": "had it not seen me off," treating the moon as a person.
Fourth line, "hitori ya yama no": "ya" is an interrogative binding particle closing with "mashi" in the fifth line.
Fifth line, "mine o idemashi": "mashi" is the counterfactual auxiliary, "would I have left the peak?"
