As it sinks aslant, the moon

Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1003
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on the moon"
This poem was composed as a moon poem. Is it telling me to feel all the more the sorrow of its setting while I am not yet sated? The moon grows clearer as it sinks, he says. The moon becomes all the more beautiful and clear the closer it comes to setting, and he questions it, as if it intended to stir his sorrow at its parting all the more.
The author, "Provisional Middle Counselor Nagakata," is Fujiwara no Nagakata. A son of Fujiwara no Akinaga, he rose to provisional middle counselor. He was a nephew of Fujiwara no Shunzei and left the diary Zenchūki.
Where 999 of this book has "katabuku tsuki ni sumu kokoro," this poem has "katabuku mama ni sumeru tsuki," sharing the sinking moon and clearness, while the clearing of the heart and the clearing of the moon form a pair.
First line, "akade iran": "de" is a negative conjunctive particle, "that will set before I am sated." It is a hypermetric line of six syllables.
Second line, "nagori o itodo": "nagori" is the feeling that lingers after parting, and "itodo" means all the more.
Third line, "omoe to ya": "omoe" is imperative and "ya" an interrogative binding particle, "is it telling me to feel?" The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "katabuku mama ni": "as it sinks." It answers "katabuku tsuki ni" in the fourth line of 999 of this book.
Fifth line, "sumeru tsuki kana": "ru" is the attributive of the continuative "ri" and "kana" exclamatory, "how clear the moon grows."
