Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1008
Headnote: "Composed on the theme "The moon at a quiet dwelling""
This poem was composed on the theme "the moon at a quiet dwelling." Even loneliness is soothed while I watch the moon; after it sets, I wish someone would come, he says. In a secluded dwelling where no one calls, he has eased his loneliness by taking the moon as a friend, but when the moon sets loneliness will return, so he wishes for a visitor to fill the time after.
The author, "Fujiwara no Takachika," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares the fifth line, "tou hito mo gana," with the next poem, 1009. Where this poem wishes for a visitor after the moon has set, the next wishes for a visitor who asks whether one is viewing the moon, so that wishes concerning the moon and visitors stand together.
First line, "sabishisa mo": "even the loneliness of a quiet life."
Second line, "tsuki miru hodo wa": "while I watch the moon."
Third line, "nagusaminu": "nu" is the perfective, "it has been soothed." The poem pauses here. Contrary to "nagusamazu" in 1004 and "nagusamanu" in 1006 of this book, it sings of being consoled by the moon.
Fourth line, "irinan nochi o": "na" is the irrealis of the intensifying "nu" and "n" the attributive of the conjectural "mu," "the time after the moon will have set."
Fifth line, "tou hito mo gana": "mo gana" is a particle of wish, "would that someone came to call." It is the same line as the fifth line of the next poem, 1009.
