Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1010
Headnote: "Sent to someone when, after leaving the world, I was going to seclude myself in the Western Hills"
After taking vows, he was to seclude himself in the Western Hills of the capital, and sent this poem to someone. Leaving the house where I lived so long, I follow the moon westward into the hills, he says. Overlaying his retreat to the Western Hills, as if following the moon as it sinks west, with longing for the Western Pure Land, he conveys his resolve to abandon the world and enter the Buddhist path.
The author, "Taira no Saneshige," was a man of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It corresponds to "tsuki o shitaeba ya yama no ha ni nomi omoi iruran" in 1007 of this book in singing of following the moon into the mountains. Where 1007 sings of the heart that wishes to enter the mountains, this one sings of one who actually enters them.
First line, "suminareshi": "shi" is the attributive of the past auxiliary "ki," "where I have long lived."
Second line, "yado o ba idete": "o ba" strengthens "o," "leaving my house."
Third line, "nishi e yuku": "going toward the west," evoking both the moon's course and the Western Pure Land.
Fourth line, "tsuki o shitaite": "shitau" means to long for or follow after. It answers "shitaeba ya" in the third line of 1007 of this book.
Fifth line, "yama ni koso ire": the emphatic binding particle "koso" closes with the realis "ire," "into the mountains I go," overlaying the moon's setting behind the mountains with his own seclusion there.
