Ashihiki no yama no ha chikaku sumu to temo matade ya wa miru ariake no tsuki

English Translation
Even though I dwell
near the rim of foot-wearying
mountains where it rises,
could I see it without waiting,
the moon that lingers into dawn?
Meaning
Even living close to the mountain rim, could I ever see it without waiting, the moon that rises late and lingers into dawn?
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1015

Headnote: "Composed on "The moon at a mountain dwelling""
This poem was composed on the theme "the moon at a mountain dwelling." Even living near the mountain rim, can I see it without waiting, the dawn moon, he asks. Even living right by the mountain rim from which the moon rises, one must still wait to see the late-rising dawn moon; he sings with light wit of a feeling known only to one living in the mountains.
The author, "Priest Jōren," was a monk of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It was composed on the same theme as 988 of this book, "the moon at a mountain dwelling." It also shares the fifth line, "ariake no tsuki," with 1000 and 1006 of this book, and is especially close to 1006 in singing of waiting for the late-rising dawn moon.

First line, "ashihiki no": a pillow word modifying "mountain."
Second line, "yama no ha chikaku": "near the mountain rim from which the moon rises."
Third line, "sumu to temo": "even though I live," expressing a concessive supposition.
Fourth line, "matade ya wa miru": "de" is a negative conjunctive particle and "ya wa" a rhetorical binding particle, "could I see it without waiting? I must wait." It answers "matsu hodo wa" in the first line of 1006 of this book.
Fifth line, "ariake no tsuki": the moon that rises late and remains till dawn, ending inverted in a noun. It is the same line as the fifth lines of 1000 and 1006 of this book.
