Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1018

Headnote: "Composed on the theme "The moon at the mountain rim""
This poem was composed on the theme "the moon at the mountain rim." In the withering wind that blows the late-night dew into frost, the moon rises cold and clear from the mountain rim, he says. Amid a wind cold enough to freeze the night dew, the moon rising from the mountain rim looks all the clearer, depicting the stern, clear scene of a night between late autumn and early winter.
The author, "Fujiwara no Tametada, Lord," was a son of Fujiwara no Tomonobu. He served as governor of Tango and other posts and, fond of poetry, held poetry gatherings. His sons Tamenari, Tametsune and Yorinari took vows and were known as the Three Jaku of Ōhara.
It shares the fifth line, "yama no ha no tsuki," with 996 of this book. Where 996 addresses the moon at the mountain rim on setting out on a journey, this poem sings of the clear form of that moon rising in the withering wind.

First line, "fukaki yo no": "of the deep night."
Second line, "tsuyu fukimusubu": "musubu" means for dew to freeze into frost, "blowing the dew into frost."
Third line, "kogarashi ni": "in the withering wind," the cold, strong wind of late autumn and early winter.
Fourth line, "sora saenoboru": "rising into a cold, clear sky."
Fifth line, "yama no ha no tsuki": ending in a noun, it is the same line as the fifth line of 996 of this book.
