So deep in the hills,
who else, living such a life
as the one I lead,
watches too the moon that parts
the leaves of the cedar trees?
Meaning
So deep in the mountains, who else, I wonder, lives in such a dwelling and watches the moon shining through the leaves of the cedars?
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1020

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
Since the mountains are so deep, who else lives such a life and watches the moon parting the cedar leaves, he asks. Deep in the hills, watching the moon shine through the dense cedar leaves, he wonders whether anyone else lives such a mountain life and gazes at the moon as he does, singing of the solitude of mountain dwelling.
The author, "Hōin Jien," was a son of Regent Fujiwara no Tadamichi. He trained on Mount Hiei and later served four times as head of the Tendai school. He wrote the historical work Gukanshō, and his personal collection is the Shūgyokushū. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
It shares the fifth line, "tsuki o miruran," with 1005 of this book, the two alike in thinking of someone who lives deep in the mountains and gazes at the moon. Where 1005 thinks of an unknown someone, this poem thinks of one who lives as he does.

First line, "yama fukami": "mi" is a suffix of cause, "because the mountains are deep."
Second line, "tare mata kakaru": "who else such," implying besides himself.
Third line, "sumai shite": "living in a dwelling," referring to life in the mountains.
Fourth line, "maki no ha wakuru": "maki" are fine timber trees such as cedar and cypress, and "waku" means to push through, "shining through the parted leaves of the cedars."
Fifth line, "tsuki o miruran": "ran" is the auxiliary of present conjecture, "might be watching the moon." It is the same line as the fifth line of 1005 of this book.
