Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1050
Headnote: "Composed on the theme "Viewing""
Like the preceding poem, this was composed on the theme "viewing." Since the spring haze has enveloped the cape of Eshima, this morning I cannot see even the waves striking it, he says. The cape of Eshima, where white waves are usually seen breaking on the rocks, is wrapped in spring haze this morning so that even the waves cannot be made out, depicting a hazy sea on a spring morning. "Kaku," to strike, also echoes "to paint," drawn from the "e," picture, of Eshima.
The author, "Fujiwara no Shigetsuna," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares "Eshima" with 989 and 990 of this book. Against those two poems of Eshima on moonlit nights, this one sings of Eshima on a hazy spring morning. It also shares "haze" with the preceding poem, 1049.
First line, "harugasumi": the haze that hangs in spring. It answers "kasumi ni ukabu" in the fourth line of the preceding poem, 1049.
Second line, "Eshima ga saki o": the cape of Eshima at the northern tip of Awaji Island, a famous place. It sings of the same place as "Eshima ga saki ni" in the fourth line of 989 of this book.
Third line, "kometsureba": "komu" means to envelop completely, and "tsure" is the realis of the perfective "tsu," "since it has wrapped it."
Fourth line, "nami no kaku tomo": "kaku" means for waves to strike, echoing "to paint" from the "e," picture, of Eshima.
Fifth line, "mienu kesa kana": "nu" is the attributive of the negative "zu" and "kana" exclamatory, "how this morning they cannot be seen."
