Amata tabi yukiausaka no sekimizu ni ima wa kagiri no kage zo kanashiki

English Translation
So many times
going and coming at Ōsaka,
in the barrier spring
the image I see for the last time
is a reflection full of sorrow
Meaning
In the spring at the Ōsaka Barrier, which I passed so many times coming and going, my reflection, seen now for the last time, fills me with sorrow.
Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1057

Headnote: "Composed when, on the last day of the many pilgrimages she made to Ishiyama, she stopped her carriage by the spring at the barrier and looked at it with a forlorn heart, thinking this might be the last time"
She had often made pilgrimages to Ishiyamadera, and on the last day she stopped her carriage by the spring at the Ōsaka Barrier and, wondering forlornly whether this pilgrimage would be her last, composed this poem. In the barrier spring at Ōsaka, which I passed so often, the reflection seen for the last time is sad, she says. Thinking she will never again see her own image in the spring along a road she had traveled so many times, she fills the poem with the sorrow of sensing the end of her life.
The author, "Higashi Sanjō'in," is Fujiwara no Senshi. A daughter of Fujiwara no Kaneie, she became a consort of Emperor En'yū and bore Emperor Ichijō. When she took the tonsure she received the title Higashi Sanjō'in, the first woman to be given such a title.

First line, "amata tabi": "so many times."
Second line, "yukiausaka no": a pivot word joining "yuki au," to go and meet, with Ōsaka, the meeting slope, "of Ōsaka, where I came and went so many times."
Third line, "sekimizu ni": "in the barrier spring," the clear spring by the Ōsaka Barrier.
Fourth line, "ima wa kagiri no": "for the last time," taking up the headnote's thought, "this time alone, perhaps."
Fifth line, "kage zo kanashiki": "kage" is her own image reflected in the spring, "zo" is an emphatic binding particle, and the attributive adjective "kanashiki" closes the binding.
