Fukaku omou koto shi kanawaba komu yo ni mo hana miru mi to ya naran to suran

English Translation
If the thing I wish
so deeply were to be granted,
then in the next life
would I come to be once more
one who gazes at the blossoms?
Meaning
If the wish I hold so deeply were to come true, would I become, even in the life to come, one who gazes on the blossoms?
Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1074

Headnote: "Composed as a poem on blossoms"
This poem was composed as a poem on blossoms. If my deep wish were granted, would I become, even in the next life, one who gazes on the flowers, he says. One who thinks of the Buddhist path ought to pray for rebirth in paradise in the next life, yet what he wishes for most deeply is to be born again as one who views the blossoms, and he sings of his unbreakable attachment to the flowers as if questioning himself.
The author, "Minamoto no Suehiro," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares with 1067 of this book, which asks that cherries be offered at one's memorial in the next life, a devotion to the flowers that reaches beyond death.

First line, "fukaku omou": "what I wish so deeply." It has six syllables, one too many.
Second line, "koto shi kanawaba": "shi" is an emphatic adverbial particle, and the irrealis with "ba" makes a supposition, "if it were granted."
Third line, "komu yo ni mo": "komu yo" is the next life, the world one is reborn into after death. It shares the theme of the world after death with "waga nochi no yo o" in the fourth line of 1067 of this book.
Fourth line, "hana miru mi to ya": "ya" is an interrogative binding particle closing with "ran" in the fifth line.
Fifth line, "naran to suran": "would I come to be such a one?" with "ran" the auxiliary of present conjecture.
