Kono yo ni wa sumubeki hodo ya tsukinuran yo no tsune narazu mono no kanashiki

English Translation
In this world of ours,
has the time I am to dwell
come to an end?
Not as on other nights,
how full of sorrow all things are
Meaning
Has the time I am to live in this world already run out? Beneath this clear moon, I feel a sadness unlike any I have known.
Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1094

Headnote: "Composed when I had gone to a woman's house and the moon was bright, and the look of the sky too made me feel forlorn"
He composed this poem on a night when he had gone to a woman's house, the moon was bright, and the look of the sky somehow made him feel forlorn. Has the time I am to dwell in this world run out; unlike other nights, all things are sorrowful, he says. Watching the bright moon at his lover's house, he is seized by a forlornness without cause and senses that the end of his life may be near. Since the poet died young, the poem leaves a deep impression, as if he foresaw his own fate.
The author, "Fujiwara no Michinobu Ason," was a son of Chancellor Fujiwara no Tamemitsu. Adopted by Fujiwara no Kaneie, he excelled in waka but died at the young age of twenty-three.
Like the preceding poem, 1093, it continues the poems that sense the approaching end of life.

First line, "kono yo ni wa": "in this world."
Second line, "sumubeki hodo ya": "sumu" is a pivot word joining "sumu," to dwell, and "sumu," to be clear, said of the moon. "Ya" is an interrogative binding particle closing with "ran" in the third line.
Third line, "tsukinuran": "tsuki" is a pivot word joining "tsuki," to run out, and "tsuki," the moon, so that "has the time to dwell run out" also echoes the clear moon. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "yo no tsune narazu": "not as usual, unlike other times."
Fifth line, "mono no kanashiki": "how sorrowful," closing on the attributive to leave a lingering note.
