Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1123

Headnote: "Composed while thinking of the impermanence of the world"
This poem was composed while thinking of the impermanence of the world. All the things of this world appear as nothing but a dream, though when I am to wake I cannot tell, he says. When he considers the fleetingness of the world, everything seems only a dream. Yet if it is a dream there should be a time of waking, and he does not know when he will wake from the dream of illusion into enlightenment, lamenting, amid thoughts of impermanence, a delusion from which he does not awaken.
The author, "Provisional Archbishop Eien," was a monk of Kōfukuji who rose to provisional archbishop. He was famed for a poem on the first song of the cuckoo and was called "the Archbishop of the First Song."
From this poem to 1130, many poems follow that sing of the impermanence of the world through dream and waking. It shares "samu," to wake, and dream with "samureba yume no" in the fourth line of 1125 of this book.

First line, "yume to nomi": "as nothing but a dream." It shares "dream" with 1125, 1127, 1128 and 1130 of this book.
Second line, "kono yo no koto no": "the things of this world."
Third line, "miyuru kana": "kana" is an exclamatory final particle, "how they appear." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "samubeki hodo wa": "the time when I should wake from the dream," overlapped with waking from delusion to enlightenment. It shares "samu" with "samureba yume no" in the fourth line of 1125 of this book.
Fifth line, "itsu to nakeredo": "though it is not known when."
