Though I spurn the world,
how I cannot help but cherish
this self of mine still,
for this is not a world
to which I may come twice

Though I spurn the world, I still find myself cherishing this self of mine, for this is not a world to which I may come a second time.
Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1129

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the theme of impermanence when I presented a hundred-poem sequence"
This poem was composed on the theme of impermanence when he presented a hundred-poem sequence to Retired Emperor Sutoku. Though I spurn the world I still cherish myself, for this is not a world I may come to twice, he says. Though he finds the world painful and spurns it, this self still seems dear to him because he will never again be born into this same world, singing of a heart that has realized the weight of a life lived only once.
The author, "Fujiwara no Suemichi Ason," was a son of Provisional Major Counselor Fujiwara no Munemichi. He was known as a master of the biwa and the koto.
Like the preceding poem, it is a poem on impermanence from the same hundred-poem sequence. It also shares the phrasing "beki kono yo narane" with "okurehatsubeki kono yo naranedo" in the fourth and fifth lines of 1141 of this book.

First line, "itoite mo": "though I spurn the world."
Second line, "nao shinobaruru": "shinobu" means to cherish or hold dear, and "ruru" is the attributive of the spontaneous auxiliary "ru," "I cannot help but cherish it still."
Third line, "wagami kana": "kana" is an exclamatory final particle, and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "futatabi kubeki": "to which one may come a second time."
Fifth line, "kono yo naraneba": "since it is not such a world," giving the reason and returning through inversion to the third line. It shares its phrasing with "kono yo naranedo" in the fifth line of 1141 of this book.
