English Translation
Think of me, I pray,
in the mountains strange to me
where I now dwell,
on my sleeves of black ink
the dew of autumn lying
Meaning
Imagine how it is: in mountains I am not used to, I have begun to dwell, and on my ink-dyed sleeves the autumn dew lies.
Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1148

Headnote: "Composed and sent when Minamoto no Kiyomasa, who had changed his form around the ninth month and was at a mountain temple, asked me to write the reply to someone who had inquired after him"
When Minamoto no Kiyomasa had taken the tonsure around the ninth month and was staying at a mountain temple, someone sent to inquire after him, and Kiyomasa asked the author to compose the reply; this is that poem. Imagine the autumn scene, the dew on the ink-dyed sleeves of one who has begun to dwell in unfamiliar mountains, he says. Putting himself in the place of Kiyomasa, newly a monk, he conveys to the inquirer the forlornness of living in unfamiliar mountains in a monk's robe, sleeves wet with autumn dew and tears.
The author, "Minamoto no Michikiyo," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares the third line "sumizome no" with the preceding poem, 1147. It also shares the first line "omoiyare" with 1084 of this book, both asking another to imagine their forlorn situation.

First line, "omoiyare": imperative, "imagine it." The poem pauses here, in inversion with "aki no keshiki o" in the fifth line. It is the same first line as 1084 of this book.
Second line, "narawanu yama ni": "in mountains I am not used to."
Third line, "sumizome no": "sumi" is a pivot word joining "sumi," to dwell, and "sumi," ink, overlapping beginning to live in the mountains with an ink-dyed robe. It is the same expression as the third line of the preceding poem, 1147.
Fourth line, "sode ni tsuyu oku": "dew lies on the sleeves," with the dew overlaid by tears.
Fifth line, "aki no keshiki o": "the look of autumn," naming what the first line asks to be imagined.
