Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems II 1152
Headnote: "Composed at a mountain temple around autumn"
This poem was composed at a mountain temple in autumn. The deer's cry at dawn under the lingering moon, when my heart is full of care, is it telling me to dwell still deeper in the hills, he says. Unable to sleep for his troubles, he greets the dawn and hears a deer crying beneath the lingering moon. Its sorrowful voice seems to urge him to leave this temple, still too near the world, and live deeper in the mountains apart from it, and he sings of a heart deepening its longing to withdraw.
The author, "Fujiwara no Yoshikiyo," was a poet of the late Heian period whose biography is not known in detail.
It shares the deer's voice with the preceding poem, 1151. Where the preceding poem laments that a deer cries even deep in the mountains, so there is no road of escape, this one hears the deer's voice as urging him to live deeper still, so the two stand in contrast.
First line, "omou koto": "the cares on my mind." It is the same first line as 1064 of this book.
Second line, "ariakegata no": "ari" is a pivot word joining "ari," there are cares, with "ariake," the dawn with the moon still in the sky, "at the dawn of the lingering moon that I greet with cares."
Third line, "shika no ne wa": "the cry of the deer." It shares the deer's voice with "shika zo naku naru" in the fifth line of the preceding poem, 1151.
Fourth line, "nao yama fukaku": "still deeper in the mountains."
Fifth line, "iei seyo to ya": "iei" means to make one's home, and "to ya" means "is it saying," "is it telling me to dwell there?"
