Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems III 1179
Headnote: "Kasagi no iwaya"
This is a hidden-name poem, concealing the words "kasagi no iwaya" across "ikade ka sagi no" in the fourth line and "i wa yasuku" in the fifth. If it lives up to its name, the wood of Yurugi must ever sway; how can the heron sleep there in peace? he says. The wood of Yurugi is a poetic place in Ōmi sung of as the home of herons, and taking up its name, "swaying," he wittily wonders how a heron can sleep soundly in a swaying wood. "Kasagi no iwaya" is understood as the rock cave of Kasagi Temple in Yamashiro.
The author, "Tōren Hōshi," was a monk of the late Heian period. He was one of the poets who gathered at Shun'e's Karin'en.
It is the eleventh poem of the hidden-name series and the last of the series.
First line, "na ni shi owaba": "shi" is an emphatic adverbial particle, and "owaba" means "if it bears the name." It is the same turn of phrase as in the capital-bird poem of the Tales of Ise.
Second line, "tsune wa Yurugi no": "yurugi" plays on swaying and on the place name, the wood of Yurugi.
Third line, "mori ni shimo": "shimo" is emphatic, "in that very wood, of all places."
Fourth line, "ikade ka sagi no": "ikade ka" means "how," with "ka" an interrogative binding particle closing with "nuru" in the fifth line. The heron is a white bird of the waterside. From "kasagi no" into the fifth line lies hidden "kasagi no iwaya."
Fifth line, "i wa yasuku nuru": "sleeps its sleep in peace," with "nuru," the attributive of "nu," to sleep, closing the binding.
