Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems III 1190
Headnote: "Composed on the theme of a love who keeps away from me and visits others"
This poem was composed on the theme of "love that keeps me apart and visits another," resentment toward a lover who sets one aside and calls on someone else. The showers on a thatched hut with board eaves divide the side that sounds from the side that does not, he says. Showers striking the wooden eaves make a sound, while those striking the thatch are silent, and in this difference he sees the coldness of a lover who visits others but never him.
The author, "Kenshō Hōshi," was the adopted son of Fujiwara no Akisuke, master of the Western Capital Office. He was known as a scholar of poetry of the Rokujō house.
It is the eleventh of the humorous poems, and from here the series turns to love.
First line, "itabisashi": eaves roofed with boards, where the showers strike with a sound.
Second line, "sasu ya kayaya no": "sasu" means fitting the eaves, "ya" is an interjectory particle, and "kayaya" a humble house thatched with miscanthus.
Third line, "shigure koso": "koso," an emphatic binding particle, closes with the perfective form "nare" in the fifth line.
Fourth line, "oto shi otosenu": "making a sound and not making one," with "otosu" playing on a lover's visit.
Fifth line, "kata wa wakunare": "waku" means to divide, and "nare," the perfective form of the inferential "nari," closes the binding.
