English Translation
The hearts within
of those who live in sorrow,
though so far away,
you know them; is it because
yours is enlightenment's light?
Meaning
That you know the hearts of those who live in sorrow, even from so far away, is it because yours is the light of enlightenment?
Commentary
Book Nineteen Buddhist Poems 1215

Headnote: "Composed on Wisdom Light Buddha, among poems on the names of Amida's twelve lights"
Among poems on the twelve names of Amida's light, this one was composed on Wisdom Light Buddha. That you know the hearts of those in sorrow though far away, is it because yours is the light of enlightenment? he says. The Wisdom Light is the light of Amida's wisdom, said to illuminate the darkness in beings' hearts. Though dwelling far off in the western paradise, Amida sees into the hearts of those who suffer, and the poet praises the Buddha's wisdom, saying it is because that light is the light of wisdom.
The author, "Minamoto no Toshiyori Ason," was a son of the Major Counselor Minamoto no Tsunenobu. He was active in the poetry circle of Emperor Horikawa and compiled the Kin'yō Wakashū at the command of Retired Emperor Shirakawa.

First line, "wabibito no": "wabibito" are people who live in sorrow, their wishes unfulfilled.
Second line, "kokoro no uchi o": "what lies within their hearts."
Third line, "yoso nagara": "though far away," the standpoint of Amida in the western Pure Land.
Fourth line, "shiru ya satori no": "ya" is an interrogative binding particle closing with "ran" in the fifth line. "Satori" is the Buddha's wisdom.
Fifth line, "hikari naruran": "naru" is the attributive of the copula "nari," and "ran," the attributive of the causal conjectural "ramu," closes the binding. It takes up the "Wisdom Light" of the headnote.
